  • Steamer
  • Rolling Pin
  • Pan
  • Chopstick

Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 3 cups All-Purpose Flour Substitute with a 1:1 gluten-free baking blend for gluten-free.
  • 2 teaspoons Dried Active Yeast Ensure it’s fresh for proper activation.
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder Promotes extra fluffiness in the dough.
  • 2 tablespoons Sugar Balances flavors and activates yeast.
  • 1 cup Lukewarm Water Use warm but not hot water.

For the Filling

  • 2 tablespoons Scallions, finely chopped Fresh scallions enhance taste compared to dried.
  • 1/4 teaspoon Chinese Five-Spice Powder Can substitute with ground Sichuan pepper.
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt Enhances all the flavors.
  • 1 tablespoon Cooking Oil Extra needed for pan-frying.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Combine flour, dried active yeast, baking powder, sugar, and lukewarm water in a large bowl. Knead until the dough is smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes.
  • Cover your kneaded dough with a clean cloth and let it rest for 10 minutes.
  • In a separate bowl, mix the finely chopped scallions, Chinese five-spice powder, and salt. Heat the cooking oil until warm, then pour it over the mixture and stir until fragrant.
  • On a floured surface, roll the dough into a 20cm x 30cm rectangle. Spread the scallion filling evenly over the dough.
  • Roll the dough into a tight strip, slice it into 12 equal pieces, stack two pieces together, and use a chopstick to twist and shape them into flower forms.
  • Let the shaped rolls sit on a parchment-lined tray for 30 minutes.

Cooking

  • For Steaming: Arrange the rolls in a steamer basket and steam for 10 minutes until soft and fluffy.
  • For Pan-Frying: Heat oil in a pan, add rolls, and fry until golden on one side. Then, add a little water, cover, and let cook until the water evaporates.

Notes

Serve these rolls with a soy dipping sauce for extra flavor. Ensure dough is smooth and elastic. Avoid overfilling the rolls to prevent bursting. Steam with gentle boil for best results.
