  • 4 cups Sweet Potatoes Canned yams can be a substitute.
  • 1 cup Sugar Reduce if paired with very sweet main dishes.
  • 1/2 cup Butter Melted; unsalted margarine or olive oil can be used.
  • 2 large Eggs Can replace with flax eggs for vegan option.
  • 1/2 cup Milk Half & Half or cream can be used for richer texture.

For the Topping

  • 1 cup Pecans Or use walnuts as a substitute.
  • 2 cups Marshmallows Optional; add in the last 10 minutes of baking.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Nutmeg Can be omitted for simpler flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon Orange Zest Helps brighten the dish.

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Cook the sweet potatoes until tender, about 20-30 minutes, then mash them.
  • Mix the mashed sweet potatoes, sugar, melted butter, eggs, and milk until smooth.
  • Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish and spread evenly.
  • Top the casserole with pecans, walnuts, marshmallows, or a combination.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes until bubbly and topping is lightly browned.
  • Add marshmallows during the last ten minutes of baking.

Notes

Garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon before serving for extra flavor.
