  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two round cake pans and dust with flour.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and red food coloring until smooth.
  4. Gradually combine wet and dry ingredients on low speed until just mixed.
  5. Divide the batter between prepared pans and bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool the cakes in pans for ten minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  7. For frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until fluffy; gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth.
  8. Assemble the cake by layering frosting between cake rounds and on top.
