  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tbsp fresh orange juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla until smooth. Gradually add to dry ingredients and mix gently until just combined.
  4. Divide batter evenly between prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes. Allow cakes to cool in pans for ten minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  5. Prepare the buttercream by beating softened butter with powdered sugar and orange zest until fluffy.
  6. Once cakes are completely cool, frost between layers and around the outside with buttercream.
  7. Mix powdered sugar with fresh orange juice for the glaze and drizzle over the frosted cake.
