This hot chocolate poke cake brings together all the comforting flavors of a cup of cocoa in a fun, easy-to-make dessert. It starts with a moist chocolate cake that gets poked and filled with melted marshmallow and warm hot fudge. A fluffy, hot-cocoa-infused whipped topping finishes it off.
Using a boxed cake mix makes this recipe straightforward and quick to assemble. Most of the time is hands-off while the cake bakes and chills. It’s a great dessert to prepare ahead for a party or a family gathering, as it’s served cold right from the fridge.
Why is Hot Chocolate Poke Cake a Must-Try?
Poking the cake while it’s still warm creates channels for the filling to seep into, making the cake extra moist and flavorful.
Melting the marshmallow fluff with a small amount of water thins it out just enough to become a pourable liquid that soaks into the cake.
Chilling the cake after adding the fudge layer is a key step. It allows the fudge to set, creating a distinct layer and a firm base for the light whipped topping.
Ingredients for Hot Chocolate Poke Cake
• Devil’s Food Cake Mix: Any brand of chocolate cake mix will work just fine for this recipe.
• Marshmallow Fluff: This is also sold under the name marshmallow creme. It’s usually found in the baking or ice cream toppings aisle.
• Hot Fudge Topping: For the best texture, use a thick, jarred hot fudge sauce meant for ice cream, not a thinner chocolate syrup.
• Whipped Topping: Be sure to thaw the frozen whipped topping completely in the refrigerator before you plan to make the frosting.
• Mallow Bits: These are small, crunchy, dehydrated marshmallows. If you can’t find them, regular mini marshmallows are a great substitute.

How to Make Hot Chocolate Poke Cake
Step 1: Bake and Poke the Cake
First, prepare and bake the Devil’s food cake mix in a 9×13-inch pan according to the package directions. Once baked, let it cool for about 15 minutes. Then, use the handle of a wooden spoon to poke holes all over the top of the warm cake.
Step 2: Add the Fillings
In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the marshmallow fluff with water until it’s smooth and pourable. Pour this over the cake. Next, warm the hot fudge sauce and pour it over the marshmallow layer, spreading it evenly. Let the cake cool and then place it in the refrigerator for at least two hours to set.

Step 3: Frost and Garnish
Once the cake is completely chilled and the fudge is firm, prepare the frosting. Simply mix the thawed whipped topping with the instant hot cocoa powder until combined. Spread this over the cake, drizzle with a little extra hot fudge, and sprinkle with marshmallows.
What to Serve with Hot Chocolate Poke Cake
This cake is rich on its own. It pairs well with a simple glass of cold milk or a cup of hot coffee.
Expert Tips for Hot Chocolate Poke Cake
Poking the holes while the cake is warm helps it absorb the fillings more easily.
Be careful not to poke holes all the way to the bottom of the pan. This helps keep the fillings inside the cake rather than pooling at the bottom.
An offset spatula is a useful tool for spreading the fudge and whipped topping layers evenly across the cake.
Ensure the cake is completely cool and the fudge layer is set before adding the final whipped topping layer. This prevents the layers from mixing together.
How to Store and Freeze Hot Chocolate Poke Cake
Store leftover cake tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. We do not recommend freezing this cake, as the texture of the whipped topping can change upon thawing.

- Eggs oil, and water as called for on the cake mix box
- 1 jar marshmallow fluff 7 oz / 198g
- 1/4 cup water 60 ml
- 1 jar hot fudge topping 11.5 oz / 326g
- 1 container frozen whipped topping thawed, 8 oz / 227g
- 2 packets instant hot cocoa mix about 1.25 oz / 35g each
- Mallow bits or mini marshmallows for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking pan. Prepare the cake batter according to the package directions and pour it into the prepared pan.
- Bake as directed on the box, typically 25-30 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool on a wire rack for 15 minutes.
- While the cake is still warm, use the round handle of a wooden spoon to poke holes all over the top, about 1 inch apart. Push down about two-thirds of the way into the cake.
- In a medium microwave-safe bowl, combine the marshmallow fluff and water. Microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring each time, until the mixture is smooth and pourable.
- Carefully pour the marshmallow mixture over the warm cake, spreading it gently so it sinks into the holes.
- Warm the hot fudge topping in the microwave for 30-45 seconds until it is pourable. Reserve about 2 tablespoons for garnish. Pour the remaining fudge over the marshmallow layer and spread evenly.
- Refrigerate the cake for at least 2 hours, or until the fudge layer is firm and the cake is completely cooled.
- In a separate bowl, combine the thawed whipped topping and the dry hot cocoa mix. Stir until fully combined and no streaks remain. Spread this frosting over the chilled cake.
- Drizzle the reserved hot fudge over the top and sprinkle with mallow bits or mini marshmallows before slicing and serving.
